About Cantiague

We understand the rules, we simplify the work, and we help you operate with confidence.

A landscape with dead, leafless trees in a grassy field under a cloudy, overcast sky.

Cantiague is a Native American term meaning “ where the wood is cut”or referencing a boundary point marked by chopped or blazed trees. This was chosen for our business governance advisory firm because it captures exactly what we will help financial services firms do: define clear boundaries around risk, cut through process complexity, and mark where strong controls begin.

Cantiague is also the name of a park where our founder, Joe spent much of his childhood playing sports and learning about life with his family. On those rinks and courses, he learned the value of clear rules, fair play, and knowing where the boundaries are—lessons that translate directly into how we approach risk, compliance, and governance today. The name honors that foundation while reflecting the work we will do now: helping firms play their best game within well-defined lines.

The meaning behind Cantiague informs our positioning without dominating it. In practice, it shows up in our narrative—helping clients establish clear lines between risk and control, creating practical “blaze marks ” in their processes so teams and regulators can see where the firm stands—and in subtle visual cues that suggest boundaries and clarity rather than decoration.

Joe Laut

Founder

Joseph J. Laut is the founder of Cantiague, a boutique risk, compliance, and AI governance advisory firm serving small and mid-size organizations across Dallas–Fort Worth.

With more than 17 years of experience in operational risk, regulatory compliance, governance, and process improvement, Joe helps firms turn complex requirements into practical, workable controls. His experience spans retail banking, investment advisory, wealth management, family-office, private-fund, and trading-surveillance environments.

Before founding Cantiague, Joe held senior risk and governance roles at Comerica Bank and Truist. In those roles, he provided independent operational-risk oversight, strengthened risk and control self-assessments, supported transformation initiatives, improved governance frameworks, and partnered with business leaders to address complex compliance and operational-risk challenges. His work has included direct preparation for and support of examinations involving the SEC, FINRA, CFPB, NFA, and the Federal Reserve.

Joe’s background includes designing and enhancing policies, assessing control effectiveness, overseeing issue remediation, evaluating trade-surveillance governance, and leading operational improvements that delivered meaningful cost savings while reducing risk. He has also supported investment-advisory, private-fund, mutual-fund, and cross-border risk environments.

Through Cantiague, Joe works with RIAs, wealth managers, community and regional banks, family offices, and financial-services firms that need senior-level risk and compliance perspective without the commitment of a full-time executive. His work focuses on practical process and control improvements, exam readiness, AI governance, and fractional risk and compliance support.
